Accessibility

Our goal

Alani is for people in the worst weeks of their life. Some of them are reading on a phone at three in the morning, some are using a screen reader, some have turned their text size all the way up, and some cannot use a mouse. None of that should decide whether they can reach the words.

The standard we are working toward is WCAG 2.2 Level AA. We are telling you what we are aiming at, not claiming we have arrived. This page is meant to be honest about the difference.

What we have done so far

These are things we can point at in the site as it stands today, rather than intentions:

• Skip to main content. Every page starts with a link that jumps past the navigation, so somebody using a keyboard does not have to tab through the header on each page.
• Text that scales and reflows. The site is built on a fluid type and spacing scale rather than fixed pixel sizes, so text grows with the screen and the layout reflows instead of breaking.
• A declared page language. Pages state that they are in English, so a screen reader pronounces them correctly.
• Larger targets in the footer. The social links in the site footer are at least 44 by 44 pixels, which makes them easier to hit with a thumb or an imprecise tap.
• Text behind the icons. Those same footer links are icons only on screen, so each one carries hidden text naming where it goes for anybody using a screen reader.

What we know is still missing

We would rather list the gaps than let you find them yourself on a bad day:

• The site has not had a formal accessibility audit, by us or by anybody else. Nobody has tested it end to end against WCAG 2.2 Level AA, so we cannot tell you every place it falls short.
• We have confirmed the 44 by 44 pixel target size on the footer links. We have not confirmed it on every other button and link across the site.
• We have not published an accessibility review of the iOS app, so nothing on this page should be read as a statement about it.
• Video on the site plays in an embedded third party player. We do not control that player, and we have not confirmed that every video carries captions.
• We have not audited color contrast, focus order, or heading structure across the whole site.

Telling us about a barrier

If something here stopped you, please tell us. You do not need to know the technical name for the problem, and you do not need to be polite about it.

What helps us fix it faster, if you have it to hand:

• the page you were on, or a link to it
• what you were trying to do
• what happened instead
• the device, browser, or assistive technology you were using

A reply will come from a person. If we cannot fix something quickly, we will tell you that plainly rather than going quiet, and we will tell you what we can offer in the meantime.

If the barrier is keeping you from something you need right now, say so and we will find another way to get it to you.
